Hi. Alright so I am a freshman and I am currently going to a community college. I don't know where to transfer, but I'm pretty sure I want to be an art or english major. I want to move reasonably far away, and attend a University. I want to dorm, but I want a relatively private dorm (at least as private as sorta possible, like if there's any with independent bathrooms) and I really want the campus to be open and nice. I currently live in Southern California but I am willing to travel. I don't have money (not much anyway) but I'm saving up and hoping to get a loan. What are some good colleges do you think!!?? Thanks!!!

There are so many choices. You'll have to think about what environment you want - Do you want seasons? Can you handle cold winters (and I mean cold with snow)? Do you prefer hot climates? How far away is reasonably far? Once you figure that out, you can begin to look at which universities fall within that area and then out of those, which offer the kind of programs you're interested in pursuing. You should pin down your major during this process. There are books that you can reference that will help with both the major and the university. You could also talk to your guidance counselor/student advisor at your CC and get his/her opinion and direction.

One thing I would suggest regarding the art degree, you should look into computer illustration/design as well as standard art class as there are a lot of well paying positions for graphic designers. If you learn the "art" software, you will be in high demand. Good luck.

I was struck by your statement saying that you want to move away,
and that you want to live in a dorm with a private bath if possible.
These are things that you can find at almost every University so the choice is yours but I was also struck by the fact that you don't have any money for such things.
Universities and living on campus take a large amount of money. Saving is a good thing but can you save $20,000 for each year you attend? Do you really want to get a loan for over $40,000? This will be hanging over you head for the next 30 years after graduation.
Another solution: Try for any grant that is out there, heck try for all of them. Continue to go to community college and stay in state. If possible and you want to move out of state move to a state where you can become a resident in a relative short amount of time. In-state tuition is cheaper. Don't try to go to the University because that costs more. Pick a smaller college, believe it or not smaller colleges give out the same degrees that the universities do with much less expense. Once you get that degree no one really cares where you got it, as long as it wasn't out of the 'cracker-jack' box. :-)

I'm a 56 year old retired teacher and my daughter graduated from a Christian college in 2002. One thing is that if you major in art, and are really in to art, I think I have heard it is best to go to a specific art college rather than a general one ?? It might help if you add some details like what part of the country or weather or ??> I live in Oregon if you need any info on that. Will this be your first move out of your parents' home ? That can be a major transition if it is. I am extremely independent , but it was still a shock to me. I went from So. CA to Oregon.

Washington State University, Pullman,Washington.
Not much of a town, but that's what makes the campus special. Everything done on campus. FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Netsirk" thinks UC Santa Barbara. If she goes, or graduated there, can't be much of a college for English. Check her spelling.
