Today I received a male pearl gourami through special order and it had a dent in front of its dorsal fin. It is also pale and has a few scales missing.

All that might have just happened thru shipping. Either way as long as your fish is breathing properly and has an appetite keep the little guy and give him love.

Hello,
Pale can simply come down to the diet or to the stress of travelling.
The dent does not sound normal as it should be smooth on a Gourami, and the scales only sounds like it has been on the end of the Gourami aggresive behaviour.

Mail order sounds like a more conveiniant way to shop for fish but nothing beats taking your time at the local aquarium and picking a fish from 30 other than someone picking one out for you. Usually the fish left to last are unhealthy or have deformities.

Hope this helps

If there are scales missing it sounds like he was probably injured during netting or packaging. he will probably recover without too much problem, just watch closely for any signs of fungus around the areas where the scales are missing. Pale isn't anything to worry about after the fish was shipped. It can take several days for his color to come back completely.

If the dent looks like an injury, call the place you ordered from and let them know you recieved an injured fish and find out about their return or replacement policy. If not it's probably deformed but should live ok.

I'm not sure what you mean by "dent" Is there a picture you have, or can find of something similar? The missing scales are probably just some sort of injury. Gourami are semi-aggressive and known to fight. A picture here would really help. Some of these species can be quite pale in color, and I'm not sure what is in an unhealthy range. http://www.petsmart.com/media/ps/images/articles/details/Fish/Breed/pearlGourami_3e749.jpg
more pale than this?
