Since I do not know you current skill level, the best advice I can give you is to learn/ practice your pentatonic scales. Scales are the foundation for any good guitarist, whether it's Yngwie Malmsteen, or Bob Dylan you always need scales. They are very boring, but, once you are comfortable with them, you can tweak them out to turn it into a solo. This skill improves your freestyle solo abilities and chord progression writing.
Good Luck and happy guitar playing

Play with guitar players better than yourself. Start using all those things you practice. You can practice all day, but if you can't apply the things you learn, they're really of no use. Listen to guitar parts you like and try learning them.

Savvy?

You could find a local guitar player and spend some hours with him/her. They could teach you some skills. (over here in md, there is Mike Elzey. He is awesome... if you live around here I would suggest him lol)

Or you could see if your school offers guitar lessons in band. Some high schools do if they need bass for concerts (which they do alot)

All I can say other than that has already been said. PRACTICE!! :)

Study others! Practice every day at least 2-4 hours!

Never do anything to break any finger on your left hand (like i did).

Watch videos - ask questions - take lessons! It's all worth it!

practice. if it's something you really like, you'll do it just to do it, and not to be good at it..
