The Philippines since colonial times is riddened with graft and corruption. There seems to be no hope of our political life. So many prominent people suggested that annexing the Philippines as a State of the US would be better.

Statehood, providing representation by their citizens in the affairs if America's governmental policies, has only improved the economic aND social growth of all other territories that have become recognized as a legitimate State of the United States.

Any graft and corruption that exists would then be under scrutiny of Federal laws and subject to their penalties. I'm not saying that the corruption would cease, but at least it wouldn't be as visible or so blatant as it is now.

A word of caution... Before the Philippines can be brought before Congress for Statehood, there must be a 2nd candidate as well. This has something to do with maintaining the balanced power in the Senate. As of the current political atmosphere, we look to Puerto Rico as this candidate. I have not heard rumors of the Puerto Rican's wishing for such an honor. In absence of this request, Statehood for the Philippines remains in limbo.

US forces had taken over the Phillipines from Spanish colonial control in alliance with Filipino guerrilas. Those same guerrilas later fought American troops because they believed the Phillipines would be their own to rule. Corruption and control was learned by Filipinos back then and had long since turned to those practices.. Not that all Filipinos are that way...but it is a watershed problem for a nation of over 17000 islands that lacks a blue water navy, a viable patrol force able to cover its territory, and a police force adequately free from corruption from the outside as well as inside. Remember the Filipinos demanded we leave their territory entirely not too long ago...the late eighties or early nineties i believe. We had an Air Force base there. The big problem is, how could we easily assimilate the nation should it invite us to do so while having a plan ready to combat corruption, piracy, and the lucative black markets which are so rampant there?

I have family that is filipino... and I am aware of sentiments there. If that is really the popular concensus, then the citizens should organize and petition to Washington.

I'm certainly not advocationg US expansion, but it seems to me there should be avenues available if a nation comes willingly. However, I don't know if all of your countrymen/women would share your views.

Not sure how some of the Eastern nations would view that, either...

What makes you think that the graft and corruption would go away simply because they became a state?
