There are a lot of different ways to get into dancing. I used to feel terribly clumsy and now I'm usually comfortable on the dance floor...sometimes I just get in the zone and I feel like I'm the life of the party...although it does depend on context. I have several pieces of advice:

* Dance by yourself, like when you're alone in your room. Put on music that makes you feel like you want to dance. Get a mirror even and look at yourself dance...see how you move...experiment with moving your body, when no one is looking. Get comfortable moving and experiment!

* Try to learn some kind of structured dance. This could be salsa, swing dancing, square dancing, ballroom dancing, break dancing, any of various forms of African dance, Irish folk dancing, Israeli folk dancing, anything--whatever your style is. Find a dance class or a place where there are lessons before a dance. Learning a structured dance will help you become more confident moving your body--it will also teach you to move your body in new ways you weren't aware of before. Kinds like swing and salsa that involve improvisation is good because you can learn the basics and then start to branch out until you are no longer thinking of "steps" and you're just moving how it feels.

* Go to clubs. Watch people who you think look good on the dance floor. You can even try to imitate what they do (don't be too obvious!). It's best to go to clubs in groups of people you're comfy with (4-5 or more is best) so you don't have to feel self-conscious. But don't just totally focus on your friends--you need to watch other people dance and dance with other people when you're comfy. Don't get drunk--although getting drunk helps some people loosen up, it interferes with learning, and it ultimately won't help you get more comfortable in general. It can be hard to find a club that you like--one that has good dancing and is not too sleazy but if you find a good one, it can be a lot of fun.

* This sounds crazy, but if you can, take martial arts. It makes you more aware of your body, and it also keeps you in shape--it will make you a better dancer in a lot of ways. Being a good dancer really, really requires you to be in shape, and also to be aware of your body.

* Listen to a lot of different kinds of music. A lot of music is really about dancing. If you want to be a good dancer you need to really know music...you need to be able to feel the rhythms. Being able to play a musical instrument (even if you're not very good) will actually make you a better dancer too, just because it makes you understand the music and be more aware of it.

I hope this helps...not every idea is right for every person...but dancing is something that everyone can enjoy. Good luck, and have fun dancing!

all you need to do is first, try to step side to side to the beat until you get on beat. Then go look up some dance studios that fit you, and any specific dance moves you want to learn.and if your looking for hip-hop classes go to hip-hop moves.org.
