About 750 AD the Muslim "Empire" was spread from Southern Spain in the west to the far western flanks of India in the east, with a lot in between. Truly fascinating the way they displaced the prior establishment of Christianity in these places so quickly. Remember Muhammad himself was around during the 600's AD.

About 1300, the Muslims had spread an empire, albeit not a united one, down onto the central coast of eastern Africa. They also controlled N. Africa and the Middle East all the way to the Himilayas.

I think it probably was nearly as big as the Roman, though, again, not united and run out of one city.

I would say, but this is just a guess, that it was not though it was large. Rome went as far as the British Isles and covered many of the same territories as the Roman Empire.
