It is VERY embarssing and was wondering if someone could tell me what is causing the smoke????
I've done the oil change and it is going for a tune in within a weeks time will this help????
its a ford laser 1989 KF
white smoke. only got reconditioned gear box put in week before christmas too they sealed a leak from the transmission and then the smoke started.

Additional details
white smoke is very sweet smell if that helps

IMPORTANT:

was also looking through engine and notice a dripping coming from back of the oil thing that holds where a seal maybe broken. Not sure I’m a girl for god sake and it is falling straight on to the catalystic converter while in park motion

Hello,
Well... it sounds like you have a bad cylinder head gasket. If the "smoke" is white, and smells sweet (like antifreeze) you might have coolant seeping into your engine's combustion chambers where it is turned to steam, and blown out the exhaust. Usually there would be an over-heating problem associated with a bad cylinder head gasket. Blue smoke is usually oil. Grey or black smoke is often too much unburned fuel.
I'm not trying to sound argumentative here, but Ford, with all the crappy cars they've been responsible for, didn't make one called a "Laser" in 1989. The Dodge boys did though, and that car has a cast iron engine block with an aluminum cylinder head. The dis-similar metal engines like that tend to fatigue, or corrode head gaskets.
Good luck. an '89 Laser may not be worth a head gasket...

ok to answer this question i have to ask a few questions. Does the car overheat? Have you noticed the water level in the radiator drop and how often do you have to fill it? Now you are saying that it only happens when you brake or accelerate? If this is a blown head gasket or cracked block you will normally notice a missfire in the engine and will normally blow smoke whist idling also. Is your brake fluid level dropping? As if the brake master cylinder is leaking into the booster and has filled it up to the vacuum line now when you accelerate and brake the fluid will rock back and forward and get sucked into the engine inlet manifold this also causes white smoke with a sweet smell to it. If this is the problem you may have to replace your catalitic converter again as it may be damaged because of the brake fluid. i hope this helps you out. Take the vehicle to a mechanic (or send me a message if your in perth australia as im a mechanic myself) and get a full diagnosis of the problem. Please let me know what the problem was either way

hope this helps

White smoke with a sweet smell suggests to me that you have a coolant leak. Now, whether this is a mere leak, or you have something far more severe like a cracked head or blown head gasket, is something that you need to take to a shop to have inspected. One thing you can do to get a better idea, is if you are having to add coolant, and does your motor oil look like carmel and frothy? If so, good luck. You will need some fairly expensive and time consuming work done to get the car running right.
Good luck.

the sweet smell sounds like your burning coolant, and by the sounds of it A LOT. You brobably have a blown head gasket, or worst case scenario a cracked block. The best thing to do is stop driving it and take it in for repairs the longer you drive it the more damage you will do.

PS: I'm not a man but I hope this helps ;)

white smoke usually means that water is mixing some where in the combustion chanber (cylinder head) - black smoke means oil.

do you have to add coolant to your radiator often ?

park your car at a spot that does not have any oil dripping and see how much fluid appears overnight - what color is the oil ?

if the oil is dripping on the converter you will get some smoke but not enough to cover cars behind you - you might need a decarb job - remove cylinder head and remove carbon and replace.

White smoke is usually caused by a crack in the engine block or water pump housing or a broken engine gasket. This allows the water from the cooling system to get into the engine block. Because of the heat of the engine, the water will evaporate and is blown out through the exhaust pipe. You need to get this fix immediately. The sweet smell comes from the antifreeze in the cooling system.

If it looks like a 80's rock concert,it's most likely a blown head gasget .Ford's have some issues with those things(Mine did). You need to get it looked at.It's about $800 for the job.If it is try your local vo-tec or auto-motive training school. They'll do it for free you have to pay for the parts(Gaskets cost less than $100).
Hope it's not that.I'll pray for you.I hope that all of our advice helps!

I would say you have a blown headgasket. From what you have said the white smoke is antifreeze getting into the engine. Is it gettine hot also??? But from what you said it sounds like a blown head gasket
