Why do white folks eat alot of meat and potatos? Answer is, STEREOTYPE, which you would be wise to stay away from.
Ignorance of other cultures is what forms such things. You should be aware that you suffer from such lack of education and try to learn more about them. The history of minorities in this country is vast and better suited for your own surfing time, try going to wikipedia for some information.
When you begin to learn about these other cultures you will also learn that when black people migrated here from Africa, specific language difficulties were identified as accents and the use of idioms and speaking styles. Some community groups tried to meet these language needs by holding ESL classes for their members (Opoku-Dapaah). In Kasozi’s study, some 60% of the research subjects stated that their accent was unfavourable in terms of integrating into the society and in finding employment. Some 28% lost or left their former employment due to language problems. What they had left was for grandparents to teach parents who taught their children. The use of the word "shrimps" has probably been around since they day they got here, and the translation was given to them that way. Today it just sounds as right to them as the word "shrimp" does to you.

Everybody has their soul food and comfort food. You should've asked this question of your other KKK friends. Look up the origin of shrimp in a dictionary.
