There's a lot of oil....others fish, farm, make things (i.e. furniture). In the big cities, there are plenty of typical city jobs -- clerks, secretaries, bankers, doctors, merchants, etc.

I've been to Angola three times. I'm not an expert but the idea I got is: in any way possible. You can stop on the sandy track you're driving on 200km from the nearest town and people will appear out of the bush within 5 minutes to sell stuff to you. Government employed policemen and teachers often also have some mahango (kind of African corn) and goats on their family land, since their salaries are too small to live on. During my travels, many police officers also wanted bribes. When I was in the city of Lubango, everywhere I went, I was swamped by people wanting to sell something. The goods they sell are reminiscent of cheap Chinese plastic articles. I've even seen people waiting in front of a shop for the bread truck, buying all the bread from the truck and re-selling it to the shop. One "petrol station" was a barrel of petrol and a siphon in a guy's backyard. Many lead subsistence lives, eating what they produce from the land.
Also some parts of Angola are extremely remote and isolated. A missionary friend of mine came across tribes in the mountainous western hinterland who are so isolated they don't even use money and don't know that they are part of a place called Angola! Another friend who was with the South African Army's reconnoissance unit in the 1980's came across cannibal tribes in the remote mountainous central region.

Yes, Angola has lots of oil and diamonds and that makes a few top government officials some of the richest men in the world, but sadly, as this is Africa, the common people seldom see a penny of oil- or diamond money.
Hope this helps, Rosa.
