first see if they have the proper amount of air presure in them. (use a good quality gauge) then take a lincon penny and put it head down into the tread if you can see Lincons hair the tread is worn and you need new tires. third you need to check the sidewalls for micro cracks.
If there are too many cracks the tires need to be replaced.

1- Make sure you check your air pressure once a week
2-check around the sidewalls for eggs (protrusions)
3-check the tread depth
4-you can also run your hand on the inside of the tire tread area-if you feel smoothness then you may need replacement and an alignment-if you feel choppiness then you may need to balance your tires

to spot check for the tread depth, look on inside "grooves" in the tread area and there will be some small bars (you may have to really look for them, but once you see them you will never miss them again) thats the best sign of treadwear. once you get down to those "wear bars" then its time to replace your tires

i work for a tire dealership-hope this helps!!

1. Each tire should have even wear - no bald spots, no difference between side(s) and center.
2. All four - or at least two on each axle - show similar wear
3. Thread thickness is checked with penny, as already described in another post
4. No signs of surface cracking, bulges on the sides, and other physical damage.

Put an upside-down penny in the tread of the tire. If the tread does not reach the top of Lincoln's head, it's time for some new tires.

Check the pressure, look at the treads; make sure you have plenty of rubber left and that the tires are wearing evenly ( not less tread on inside or outside edges).
If you have your tires rotated every 4,000 - 5,000 miles you should be O.K.

uneven wear, like the middle is bald but the shoulders are good or the other way around, also look for overall tread depth, if you put a penny in the tread upside down you should not be able to see the top of lincoln's head.

Look for weather cracks in the side wall, is the tire even across the tred or is it feathered.
