Papelbon's sholder was getting injured because of the inconsistent amount of playing time. If he was in a standard rotation this would not happen. I realize that the Sox would need a closer but I think the Timlin can do the job.

To understand why he is in the bullpen you have to understand what he has been doing for his whole minor league career. He has been conditioned to be a starter the whole time. There are different ways to prepare a starter from a reliever. That is why Pap's shoulder gave him problems last season - he wasn't used to the grind of inconsistent bullpen outings, not to mention the extra strain he put on himself by admittedly throwing "extra hard" in the closer role. Since he was conditioned to be a starter over the last 5 or more years, that is the best place for him at this point. They could reverse his workouts to make him better suited for the bullpen, but they see more value in him as a starter.

papelbon has always wanted to be a starter but at this point its really not wat HE wants its what the stupid manager wants. francona is sayin that if pap is a starter it will be easier on his arm.. i personally disagree. i think that if hez throwing 15 pitches a night it will be easier than throwing 86-103 pitchers every five days. paps juss gonna blow out his arm and then it will be a francomas fault he doesnt kno a good thing until he dont have it no more. like this alex gonzalez and mark loretta thing. no way are the red sox gonna succeed with the type of feilding they have right now and theyre definatly not goin nowhere with joel pineiro as a closer so when their in 3rd place agian the resolution will be quite simple. FIRE FRANCONA!

The doctors that looked at Papelbon's arm said his arm can't handle throwing every day, his arm is better off throwing every 5 days vs. having to be ready to go 4 days a week.

His shoulder is different from the other 150 relief pitchers in baseball and the other starter trained pitcher (Piniero) that will be taking over for him. Plus, he'll get Starter cash...innings pitched bonus' etc..and if he fails, he can always go back to the pen..

The reason is because he had health troubles and his doctor said that it was best that he should pitch on a regular schedule rather then pitching on an irregular schedule and risking damaging his body.
