I'd love to help you, but I haven't read that yet. I read one of her poems once; her style reminded me a lot of the Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, but she is, I think I heard, from Long Island.

Is "Gretel in Darkness" a poem of hers, or an essay, or article? If you have read it & don't get it, there are lots of sites you can find, like amazon.com, (where they are selling a book, OK), but people then comment on why they liked it, further down the page. They also show other similar works to compare it to.

There are free literary and book review sites and homework help sites online. Try Google.ie or ask.com with the title and author. Even searching the wwweb with the author's name helps, as it can bring up opinions about the writer, or why they chose to write on certain themes, why they are drawn to them. And you'll find opinions you might like or agree with or absolutely not - but it all makes the author's work more transparent to you finally.
