It really depends on the type of business. But everyone has their own opinion on common courtesy and how it is used. Like this librarian in my school... you say thank you and she is like yeah ok whatever, but if you dont say thank you she wont help you out next time you go into the library. It's pretty stupid.
But, some people do show courtesy while others are just getting their job done and over with. It I'm sure does hurt some businesses in the long run.

Common courtesy makes a tremendous difference that some businesses don't realise, as it's invisible.
If you give good service (and that includes courtesy), three people will know about it within the week; if you give bad service, thirty people will know about it.
It costs nothing to be pleasant and say "please", "thank you" and "you're welcome", does it? Then your customer will be happy to come back.
If you're curt, surly and dismissive, that customer will go elsewhere to find somewhere where he does feel welcome.
Your librarian probably doesn't feel any need to care, as you have no choice at the moment, but in the big, bad outside world people DO have a choice and they'll exercise it!

People who have common courtesy will encourage the customers to want to come back. They will tell their friends that your business is a wonderful place and bring you more business.

respect and courtesy to the consumer is crucial- put yourself in a 2nd person prospective. I think that a carefully monitered combination of casuality and dignity is the key- it will keep the consumer relaxed, comfortable, and feeling equal to the business that he/she is dealing with.

I think it depends on the consumer and how much respect they demand where they spend their dollars. In my case if the service is bad you won't get my money I'd drive 40 miles past bad service to be respected.

if the workers are rude the customers will tell other people and it will cause people to take their business else where.

Big time affect. Bad customer service is a "silent" killer. Customers who don't feel welcome and appreciated soon find someone else to take care of them. It is frustrating because warm service is cheap to provide.
