There is no state required list, but the district can require certain books and the teacher most definitely can require certain books. There is a reading list, however, that is dependent upon each student's score on the CST - Language Arts.

It depends on the school district. I'm not quite sure how it works in other districts but Oakland Unified School Districe recomend the list created by the Oakland Public Libraries. San Francisco uses the San Francisco Library list.

In some cases the list is actually made by the teacher for the following year. When my daughter attended a Charter School, just before Summer break she was given a list of books that her next teacher would use during the school year. The students were encouraged to read books from the list and submit the list of books they read at the beginning of the school year. It really helped to prepare her for what the new school year had in store.

No. There's probably a recommended one though. Required reading lists are done at the local level.
