Because they hear a lot of negativity...from the media and from their own families or friends. Kids are lazier these days because they're spoiled with modern day comforts and amenities (thank God for most of that...I'd hate to live like they did back in the old days). But I think that the state of the world can be looked at positively or negatively. You can see the harsh reality of some issues and situations but you can choose to look on the bright side of everything and try to have hope (not talking about ignoring the reality of what's going on) but think of the good things. Change what you can and learn to accept what you can't change. A lot of kids are using drugs and they have emotional problems from that or their family life so this makes them tend to be more apathetic. There are still a lot of kids that aren't apathetic and they have the desire and drive to make something of their lives.

Who cares? No seriously, unfortunately in our society (western) these days, we do not allow our children to develope naturally and we very rarely encourage the true initiations that the human psyche requires for normal growth.

the advertising industry uses children as emotional levers to get money from their parents, thus setting up a lifetime of warped relationships.

Combine the above with a rather sad and tired world culture and you get kids with no direction, no hope and skills (emotional, mental and spiritual) to cope...apathy looks good from this point of view.

Not all young people are apathetic, but many have no alternative

Who says apathy is a problem? Are you saying that our youth is too apathetic or not enough? Please explain
