The type of paper, the amount that needs to be erased and the firmness of the marking would determine my choice of eraser.
For intricate art, small areas, delicate paper and lightly drawn images I prefer the kneaded rubber. It can be shaped like putty to fit into any space you need.
For larger areas, tougher papers and firmer marking I use an Artgum eraser. It is crumbly but can do larger areas and if used gently won't damage your paper.
For daily paperwork and normal writing situations any eraser will do. Pink Pearl is a good one. So is the Staedtler plastic eraser which is for paper or film.

Try to find an electric eraser. It's filled with a Staedtler vinyl eraser and the rotation gets off almost any kind of pencil without harming the paper-you can even draw with it,cover a page with graphite and erase the highlights.
There is also the Mr. Clean Magic eraser in the detergent aisle of the supermarket-it removes crayon marks from walls and pencil from almost anything with destroying the surface.

A rubber eraser. Any art store sells them, and you can knead them like clay to shape however you want. They pick up all the pencil mark and leave no messy crumbs like a pink eraser. It's the only kind of eraser I use.

The Stanford Magic Rub peel off eraser is pretty cool. Handles well, erases VERY well BUT it's NOT CHEAP! It cost like $16.00 no joke! BUT IT WORKS.
