I really want to drill a hole into a rock (I've made it my goal for the summer) but I'm not sure how I'd go about doing it. Any ideas?

I would like to add on this...my funds are very short...like...basicly nothing. The only tools I have is a hammer, nails...and a typical electic screwdriver, and other basic tools. Is it totaly hopeless?

I work for a concrete drilling and sawing company we often drill holes in rocks for use in water fountains, lights and other landscaping ideas people come up with.

If you are drilling a small hole (1/4"- 1 1/2") in a large rock you can use a simple hammer drill that you could rent from a hardware store if you try to use that for a smaller rock it could fracture it and it wont be a clean hole.

The best thing to use is a Core Drill you can drill any size hole in anything that you want it uses a diamond tipped bit and usually uses water to cool and lubricate it. It will make a very clean and straight hole.

A core drill is very expensive but you can rent them. Or have a local drilling company do it for you. My company does both we are located in Milwaukee WI you can send me a pm if you are nearby I'll help you out.

It depends on the size of the rock if the thickness that you are going to drill thru is not too thick then a carbide bit in a electric hand drill It also depends on the size of the hole 1/4 - 3/8 dia if larger and thicker use a hammer/drill and a carbide bit Best thing to do is check with a vendor that sells stone in your area There are also diamond impregnated cutting tools which get expensive

I own a diamond drilling company. Dont use carbide but use a diamond core drill. They fit into a pillar drill but if you want to use it in the chuck of a normal hand drill then they will be fine. Richard

that is a good bit but do you have a hammer drill? your bit burned up because its spinning to fast but a Variable speed hammer drill and a bosch bit should work, diamond bits are better but is there a harbor freight store in your city cause they have blades and bits all made in china and cheap, hammer drill is the ticket
