The Great Ride - in October, 1918, 12,000 Australian Light Horsemen rode through the desert and were the first to take the city of Damascus(Syria). Called " the greatest exploit in the history of calvary" by Chief of Staff Earl Wavell, it occurred near the end of the First World War, and would be one of the last times that calvary were used in modern warfare.
