The pin specification just tells you what memory size stick you can use.
Some of the real old ones only had 72 pins.
Today there are 128 pin, 176 pin, etc.
You just have to buy what fits in your computer.

The basic idea of having more pins is to send more data at the same time for higher speed computing.

Hi. Each RAM format uses a different number of connections to the motherboard. As long as the pin number is the same as older memory (like 182 pin DDR) then the speed of the RAM is clock dependent. FSB in other words. http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=DDR&gwp=13
