I have an 8 month old female rat who's lived by herself since I got her. I want to get her a friend. I know it's best to introduce younger rats to adults. Would a baby female or a neutered baby male be a more compatable cagemate?

Thanks to those with helpful info so far - however what if I purchase a baby male rat, quarantine him until he is of neutering age (I know I qualified pocket pet vet), and tried to introduce him? Would the female fight with him?

she's going to fight with anyone that you introduce her to until dominance is established. i'd go with another female for her.

Neutering is a very risky procedure for small animals, including rabbits and smaller animals. I would strongly discourage you from purchasing a neutered rat as this rat could have health issues related to the surgery and I would definetely not recommend that you have a male rat neutered. I think a young or even older female rat would be a very nice cagemate, although it should be taken into consideration the size of the cage and personality clashes.

I think that a cute little kitty cat would be an excellent cagemate for a rat. :)
Just kidding.......I think EITHER would be just fine. The rat probably won't even know the difference.

another female rat
but be careful because many female rats are pregnant, then you have 20 rats and then they get pregnant with the babies
if she likes people better than people should be her friends
fats get tumors and are very expensive for surgery and some rats fight eachother but you dont know until its too late
petsfinder.com should help

it somewhat is rather risky to introduce your rats to any new rats with out quarantining the recent rats for no less than 2 weeks. in the event that they have been the only rats on the humane society for 2 weeks and that they have not shown any signs and indicators of ailment, then you certainly're rather secure to anticipate that they are ok. whilst you're uncertain if the rats on the safeguard have been uncovered to different rats then flow forward and undertake them yet save them at a pal's abode the place they gained't are available in touch with the different rats, for 2 weeks. once you flow to the quarantined rats verify to bathe up and alter your outfits till now going abode and coping with your rats. as quickly as the two weeks is up and additionally you're arranged to introduce them on your rats do it very, very heavily. a tub is a huge place to introduce them because it does not carry smells and is way less probable to be a territorial place. regardless of if the preliminary assembly is going nicely, please nonetheless be very careful and don't positioned them interior an analogous cage jointly with your present day rats. rats will rip one yet another aside in the event that they sense threatened by potential of the different ones. save their cages facet by potential of facet (yet not too close so they don't look to be waiting to snatch each and each others ft or tails) and enable them to get used to one yet another that way till now shifting all of them in jointly completely. till now i replaced into knowledgeable in introducing rats to one yet another, i replaced into devastated to verify that my rat in fact ripped my new rat to products. it replaced right into a terrible, terrible element to verify and that i nonetheless sense very in charge so because it somewhat is why i save emphasizing so which you would be able to be careful. sturdy success with each and every little thing and robust for you for adopting from a safeguard.

a female rat. However, plz give them time. Keep them in separate places at first, and then everyday hold one in one hand and while still holding on to it, hold it next to the other, allow them to sniff each other but not attack. repeat for a while until they are familiar.

Another female rat.
Just introduce them slowly, clean the cage out and move things around before you put them both together.
