its still a some what new sport compared to most others. its similer to laser tag except it is a lot more fun because of the sounds (you can hear the paintballs as they pass by and the guns sound similer to a real one just a lot quieter) and yes the sting of getting hit. its a lot more involved then laser tag, if it didnt hert it would be just like laser tag, but your limited to range, and knowing its gunna hert keeps most people from just casualy walking around looking for the other person. asfar as the pain goes, it only herts for a second, literly unless your are hit in any "sinsiteve" areas. getting hit by one while playing can be a bit startling at first but its not a big deal once you play a few times. on the other hand if you put on a mask and walk out 30 feet and tell someone to shoot you with a paintball to see how it feels.....it will hert a lot. trust me dont "see how it feels first" just try it its fun. as far as cost. if you dont own a paintball gun then you can rent or barrow one, and paint balls can be expensive. so depending on how long you might play that day you can spend anywhere from $10 to $50 for one day of play. oh and lastly, dont buy your paintballs from wal-mart or any cheap places like that. paintballs hav a shelf life and usually the ones from wal-mart sit in a warehouse for a long time before they get t the store, and it will ruin the day if you have to deal with issues with the balls breaking in the gun or not breaking at all. hope this helps

Basically it is mock combat.

In a typical scenario two teams are formed and identified with different color armbands. Then they start at opposite sections of the field and move in to fight each other. Anyone that gets any of the enemies paint on his or her clothing is counted as killed.

The scene can be in the woods, but it can also be in an arena that is filled with man-sized obstacles that you can hide behind and shoot around.

Most of the time each team is given a flag to protect and the team that captures the enemy flag wins that round. Clearly, the best way to capture the enemy flag is to “kill” all of them, but tactics, bluff, and maneuvers all come into play here and the team with the best plan is the one most likely to win.

It's kind of like laser tag, only a little more realistic and somewhat cheaper. You and your buddies pretty much just run around the woods and shoot each other. The guns are designed to fire projectiles filled with paint so you can see who shot what where, and so you don't actually kill your friends. I've heard they sting pretty bad.

All you want to know and more! It is heart-pounding fun, but some take it to the extreme.
