You are going to need basking heat and UVB. You can either get a mercury vapor spot/flood lamp which produces UVB and heat together, or you can get a seperate UVB and basking heat spot/flood lamp. Either way it will cost you about the same, however, I recommend a mercury vapor lamp ( Mega-Ray or T-Rex ). They produce more UVB than flourescent lamps, and typically last a longer if you take care of them. If you are going to use flourescent tubes though, I recommend using 2 of them.

UVB is a requirement. If the lamp does not specifically state it produces "UVB", then it does not. UVA is important as well, but a UVA lamp does not produce UVB unless it says so. A UVB lamp however will also produce UVA.

The size/wattage of the bulbs you need will depend on how large your setup is. You may have to adjust distance to get proper temps.

Go to boxturtlesite.org, Austin's turtle page, anapsid.org ( chelonians section ), and the appropriate forum on kingsnake.com to find more information that you should know before deciding to get a turtle.

You need to get a UV-lamp specifically for reptiles. You can buy this at any good pet shop, and the tube should cost $20 - $30. If you don't already have a hood to hold the bulb you'll need one of those too. Keep in mind that this isn't the same as the basking light, which primarily provides warmth.

Go to home depot and buy a clamp dome lamp, same thing as the pet stores, half the price. i'm not sure if you need a bulb as well, but you will have to play with the wattage, or get something to make the temperature higher or lower. they are for sale commercially, or you could make one out of a dimmer switch if you are experienced in electric work of that kind.

like the person above me said, you can wither get a nnormal bulb with a flourescent uvb tube light, or a mercury vapor bulb.

the type of fixture is not important, but the bulb is.
we use regular clamp lights from the hardware store or walmart for the fixture as they reflect well. for the bulb, we love ESU Reptile bulbs. any UVA/UVB bulb will work.

prices where you live may varry, but:
Clamp Light (fixture): $5-$10
ESU Reptile Bulb (depending on wattage): $6-$15

All captive turtles could desire to have a warmth source. somebody responded that snappers do not choose a warmth source. it somewhat is not actual. interior the wild snappers will glide on the exterior to heat up and get some image voltaic, regardless of in the event that they not often depart the water to bask. warmth is needed for digestion and common wellness. they could desire to be waiting to decide on a great determination of temperatures. i assume you should apply an below tank heater for tortoises, yet they have an inclination to get too warm except you connect them to a rheostat or dimmer to regulate the warmth output. you will possibly nonetheless choose an overhead UV gentle. in case you decide on a water turtle you're able to be able to desire to have an overhead source of warmth/ basking spot and UV gentle in case you are able to't supply the right kit, then according to danger you're able to desire to attend till you are able to.
