Have you tried crochet.about.com?
granny squares make sense once you have made one, the key is to remember when you turn a corner to make a square you have to crochet, then chain one, then crochet in the same space.
It is amazing how it works!

granny squares are soooooooooooo easy, aunt lidias and coats and clark both had little booklets with them in but im sure you can find them on line, www.geocities.com/riverglorious/Patterns/grannysquare.html
