We have some tree roots that keep blocking our sewer pipes every spring. Our house was built in the 40's.

The plumber wanted to sell us some really expensive chemicals. There has to be some other options.

Now, that you have advice on what to do about the trees. The answer to your question to kill the roots in your pipe. Yes, they do make chemicals that you buy yourself and put down your drains. Cost? Can't say. Check with Home Depot or Lowe's.

Once you get the roots killed, you need to do something about the hole in the pipe that the roots are getting in. If you don't fix that problem, roots will continue to get in there. If you have a hole in your pipe "they will come".

I saw this on "this old house hour". They drilled the roots using a bit on a snake. Then they inflated this bladder made of two part epoxy. It formed a liner on the pipe that the roots could not penetrate. Looked pricey, if you could even find someone to do it, but cheaper than replacing the pipe. Bonus:Keep the tree, and don't dig-up your front lawn.

Clear the trees from around the plumbing area..otherwise buy the chemicals. Or buy thicker pipes or deter the roots by put up barriors against em near the piping.

I would seriously consider removing the tree. After that you should dig around the foundation of your house on the tree side and remove any root remnants from around the plumbing and foundation.

You have to cut the tree down and poison the stump. the roots dig deep for water and they go towrds your plumbing cuz the roots hear the water so to stop the roots you have to poison the stump.

Drill holes in the roots if they are large and pour Round Up on directly (not the diluted spray but the full strength concentrate). Just don't ever expect to grow anything there!!
