Im 20 weeks pregnant and just had an ultrasound. she said she was positive I was having a girl. she carried on looking at other stuff and when I asked her what percentage she thought it was a girl she said 80%.
The doctor came in and said everything looked great and normal (which is obviously my priority) and she said it looked like a girl too.
She asked me to come back in 3 weeks though because she didnt think the baby was in the best position to check everything, even though everything look fine. So maybe the tech could have been wrong? But if they arent really sure, surely they dont say what they think it is?

Usually they can tell pretty well by 20 wks. I've been told by many techs and drs that they'll go up to 95% sure with a boy and around 80-85% sure with a girl. Did you happen to see the three lines that mean a girl. It'll be two longer lines with a short line in-between like a sandwich. If you see that, it's pretty safe to say it's a girl.

Nowadays, doctors try to schedule the ultrasounds between 20 and 24 weeks to determine sex of the child (if the parent(s) wish to know) since it is normally the optimum time of determining sex as the baby is large enough to make out it's "parts" but small enough not to be scrunched up making it impossible to see those "parts". It is hard to give an accuracy rating, considering the many factors that must be taken into account, such as the position of the child. You will NEVER get a 100% for sure answer with an ultrasound. Putting that little margin of error keeps them out of trouble.

Congradulations on the baby! Hope she's happy and healthy! Good luck!

CONGRATS ON YOUR BABY!

I had one at 20 weeks and they said i was having a girl the thing is, at that point if its hard to see something.. it is most likley a girl. at 20 weeks you can see if there is a little hot dog a packin down there.

what they look for is 4 little lines. that would be the labia. if she was not in the best position, they would be like mine. she was facing the wrong way. they are not so much looking for sex. the ultrasound tech was also looking for signs of down syndrom in the back and the skull. my DD was not in the best position and i have to go back next week too for another u/s

Congrats on your baby girl!

In general it is easier for the techs to be wrong if they say your having a girl rather than a boy, thats what I was told by my doctor, sometimes the baby can just be in the wrong postion I guess. 20 weeks is kinda early to be really sure so before you go and buy all pink you should wait for your next sonogram. Congrats

At 20 weeks the sonographers are usually pretty accurate, since the sonogram machines are so much better than they used to be. Sounds like you may be wanting a little boy, huh? Well, congratulations and I hope the baby is born healthy and happy!

most sonographers are pretty good at being able to tell, but even the best is just an educated guess, noone really knows for sure until that baby arrives. I have had four and all four of mine have been what the sonographer said, but I know of women whose sonographer said one thing and turned out to be another.

The babys position can mostly determin weather or not they can tell the sex of the baby. Just go back in 3 weeks, and if they say its a girl still, then it MUST be a girl..

Good Luck and Congradualtions!!

It all depends on how much the experience the sonographer has had, the one that did my ultrasounds with both my ultrasounds were right both times. at your next appt. just ask her how long she has been doing ultasounds and if she has been doing it for a while then she is probably pretty accurate. good lck and congrats

Usually they say 80%. They cannot say 100%, because they aren't 100% sure. There are many things that could account for it being wrong. But majority of the time, they're right. Especially with girls. If nothing's there, then NOTHING'S there, unlike boys which could really be fingers, umbillical cord, etc. etc. I agree, it's a girl.

it's usually easier to tell when you're further along, but if the tech told you it was probably a girl, i'd believe her, but don't buy everything pink, there is still that 20%chance of it being a boy. good luck
