There's no link between the two words. Ster means Money but oid and roid has no english meaning.

Ster doesnt have ANY deffinite meaning

A steroid is a terpenoid lipid characterized by a carbon skeleton with four fused rings. Different steroids vary in the functional groups attached to these rings. Hundreds of distinct steroids have been identified in plants, animals, and fungi. All steroids are derived either from the sterol lanosterol (animals and fungi) or the sterol cycloartenol (plants). Both sterols are derived from the cyclization of the triterpene squalene.[1]

The prefix ster- was abstracted from chole-sterol (chole- + Greek stereos, solid; so called because it was first found in gallstones.)

The suffix -oid is either from (Greek.) -oeides meaning "like" or "resembling or from -eidos meaning "form, shape."

Hope this help. Good luck.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/sterol

The word Sterol (-ol is a suffix used in chemistry for alcohols(type of compounds), usually) uses the ster- root, which comes from Greek: Stereos=solid and stear(pronounced stair)=fat. Also, Steatic=related to fat.

And it's not -oeides, it's -eides that means "-like". O is a "connective vowel" for different word roots.
So ster-o-id (ster-o-eid) is the ster-like, sterol-like
(-id with the same meaning has been used innumerable times in maths, medicine and natural sciences, for example in the words cycloid, nulloid, asteroid).
