It was a group of Writers who were seeking to break the color barrier in the very, very white publishing world. The group was started in 1950 and is still in existence.

The Harlem Writers Guild was founded as a writers workshop in the "Village" of Harlem in New York City in 1950. The founding members included: Dr. John Henrik Clarke, Rosa Guy, John Oliver Killens and Walter Christmas. Some of the better known members and alumnae of the Guild include Maya Angelou, Ossie Davis, Audrey Lorde, Terry McMillan, Lon Elder III, Paule Marshall, Sarah E. Wright, Irving Burgie and Walter Dean Meyers.

Their Mission

The Harlem Writers Guild is a community of writers of African descent whose mission is to preserve the experience of black people in the written word and all arenas of creative expression.
