The movie 'The Grapes of Wrath' is based on Steinbeck's book of the same name which was awarded the Pulitzer prize for fiction.

The themes are the same apart from John Ford had to slightly alter the strong anti capitalist politics of the novel to get the movie past the censors. A general rule would be that he felt that it was a time of extreme hardship and suffering for the poor of America.

Well, it was the Depression. That was a bad time for every one. And it was true that people from Oklahoma were going to California to work because of the dust bowl in Oklahoma in the 30's (as if the depression wasn't bad enough). It's also true that the people from Oklahoma ("Okies") were treated like s***. I think John Ford was trying to show just how bad and sad those times were.
