Their machine is probably no different than any other but you do in fact need a fluid transfer machine for a full flush.
However unless you know the history of the vehicle I wouldn't do it. A simple "spill-n-fill" and a new filter would be all you want to do. If you don't do regular flushes every 20k-40k miles you dont want to do one now. It can actually cause damage.
A neglected tranny will start to form heat scale deposits within the tranny. If you do a flush you introduce fresh new detergents that will cause this scale to break away and really mess with components and plates.
The key to tranny flushes is to keep to your cars recommended schedule otherwise flushing a neglected high mileage tranny will do more harm than good.

RE:
How often should I get my transmission fluid flushed?
I own a '97 Toyota 4Runner with 140K miles on it, and was wondering how often I should have the transmission flushed. A 76 Station gave me an estimate of $160 for their $4,000 machine that pulls all the old stuff out and really flushes it with new--so it doesn't grime up again in a couple...

ok are we talking about a manual transmission or an automatic here. I think transmission fluid in an automatic should be flushed every 60,000 miles pending the driving. Same for a stick. If you drain the tranny you will only get about 2/3 of the fuel out so I suggest goign to s shop where they can flush it.

Transmission flushing is a very profitable service for anyone doing it. Some flush machines suck up the old fluid by running a hose down the filler pipe. After the old stuff is pulled out, they fill with new fluid. In some cases they don't even pull off the transmission pan or replace the filter. "Flushing" is not absolutely necessary as long as you drain and replace your fluid and filter every 40,000 or so. If you pull a trailer, reduce the miles between changes. Dirty and varnished transmission fluid usually smells somewhat burnt or hot.
The $160 is not outrageous, but it is plenty for this job.

The estimate is a little high, but if their machine also flushes the torque converter as well as transmission, and includes a new filter and band adjustment, then it's a decent price. Have you checked any local transmission shops for the same service? As for changing at regular intervals, your owners manual should tell you what they are. Probably every 40-50 thousand miles or so.

That is a very high estimate, I paid $55 to have my trans flushed and had the filter and fluid changed.

Look in your manual and follow that.
$160.00 from a service station is not a bad price....little high.
Try a Quick lube place...my guess $40-$50 cheaper.

Assuming you have the maintenance manual for the car, how ever often it tells you to.
As for if it is normal...couldn't tell you.
