All animals molt in one form or another. Humans are always shedding skin, and these skin fragments can be microscopic and are eaten by dust mites. My plated lizard sheds only a few scales at a time whereas some reptiles -like snakes- shed all the skin at once.

Molting would be most dangerous to arthopods, not only can they get stuck in the skin, until their new shell hardens they are at great risk from predators. Birds can just pluck out any feathers that are troublesome.

Arthropods - they molt their entire skin at one time, leaving them with a soft body while the exoskeleton hardens. They are more vulnerable during the time when their bodies are soft. Birds molt by losing feathers and it does not happen all at once.

It's most dangerous for arthropods, because they are left completely vulnerable while waiting for new exoskeleton to harden up. They're more susceptible to temperature changes, predators, etc.

Birds molt, but they're usually not left completely naked and at the mercy of the external environment.
