My four month just finished a course of antibiotics for an ear infection. The day after she stopped the medicine, she started having small watery stools everyday and she seems to be having difficulty passing the stools. Is this something to worry about and what can I do?

How many? I think eight is the magic number that makes it diarrhea. If that's the case she's too young to not see a doctor just in case. Otherwise- baby stools change a lot. Especially when you start feeding solids. As for the difficulties in passing the stools, what makes you think that? Is it a grunting noise? Maybe she goes red in the face a little? As babies get older, passing a stool becomes more of an event because they're having them less often. Most babies make a "poop face", and it's nothing to be concerned about, especially if the stools are watery, not hard. If you're still concerned, you really should take her to the doctor just in case, but it's probably nothing (unless of course it falls into the diarrhea category I listed above). You might also try giving her an ounce of pedialyte just to make sure she's getting enough fluids.

Antibiotics can sometimes mess up the normal bacteria in everyones intestinal tract, babys included. So the watery stool may be a result of that. Just be very careful that she does not get dehydrated, babys as young as yours can get that way real fast. If she is having diarrhea, she may be having stomach cramps and that may appear that she is having problems passing the stools. I would suggest Pedalyte, but I don't know if babys as young as yours are OK to use it. I would check with the doc.

I would call the doctor. Some antibiotics can cause diarrhea. It also can be caused by some foods as well.

I would take her to see the doctor.

It is really important to keep her fluids up too, as it is easy for small babies to get dehydrated.
