Where you live depends on what kind of termites exist in the area. where I live I have successfully treated subterranean termites. They nest in the ground and move to a wood source for food. You can very successfully treat by going to a tractor-supply (or similar) store and getting borax. It's in powder form. Create a trench around the house or other structure with a broom handle. Pour the borax in along the trench and water with a hose. You might even poke holes a few inches down with a metal rod and throw in some moth balls every few feet- this is also works well. You can go the professional route which may or may not work. They usually don't guarantee their work and they're expensive, and the chances are good for reinfestation.

Maybe. It is probably worth while to get a professional inspection done to see where the swarms might have come from. You can treat exposed wood with nasty stuff all by yourself to keep the bugs off, but if there are bugs IN the wood, that won't help.

Pick a dark and stormy night. When the lightning flashes, blow up the house.... blame the storm, call the insurance company and re-build with steel... termites can't eat steel.

The best thing to do is to use the services of and exterminator as the chemicals that are used to get rid of these pests is very very dangerous and will kill you if they are used or mixed by a person who does not have the previous knowledge!!! That's why we Have Exterminators they have to have a degree in the field of hazardous chemicals and their usuages.
