We used to be good friends and always said hi, but we barely see each other at school anymore, and when we do he's always surrounded by people so i dont really say hi anymore. one day he came up to me and asked me why i havent been saying hi lately, and seemed kinda upset. at first i thought he was just joking around, but when i saw his face i realized he was being serious. was he that sad that our friendship kinda drifted apart? or is he trying to tell me something?

He was trying to tell you something by showing you that he cares about your friendship enough to confront you about it. If you really want the friendship to continue, there's no other way than to talk to him about it. And no, it doesn't have to be a ridiculously serious talk - just be honest about how you feel. Say it simple, there's no doubt that from what you've stated that he'll do the same.

Sure you can. The next time you see him, just ask him if you could please speak to him alone. I believe you should do this, or you may alway's wonder what could have been, also it is better to let out your feeling's. You have nothing to lose, and maybe a lot to gain. You really have to do this sort of thing in life, in many situations.
Like if you never ask for a raise, well you may never get one, that is just a example. Never be scared to ask a question, or express yourself!
Be confident, and always remember we may not alway's like the response we get, but at least we tried! And we know!

If he's so upset why, when he's surrounded by people, hasn't he called you over and introduced you to his new friends ?
Maybe he's feeling guilty and trying to alleviate that guilt by putting some of the blame on you for the friendship lapsing.

You need to talk to him. If he is around other people just ask if you can talk to him alon for a couple minutes. I'm guessing he will be Ok with that. Either you did something that is bothering him or he is digging you in a way that you didn't know. Be honest with him and he'll be honest with you (hopefully)
