I'm subbing for a few days in a 5th grade art class but was left with no lesson plans. Any ideas of any simple, fun games or projects to do, as they are getting a little out of control with nothing to do? I have no prior knowledge as to what they are currently going over or covering, so I need a generic type of game/project that relates to art and will keep all the students actively involved. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Okay well um first of all I suggest DO NOT let the kids get whatever they want (including stuff like paint, oil and dry pastels, modeling clay, sand and rocks etc.) and just start using it as they may make a mess, leave it out, handle it improperly, or it just may make the art teacher mad as she may not want them into everything while she is gone. I say you give them a few options of using magazines (every art room should have magazines somewhere) and scissors to make collages. Or my art teacher has coloring sheets that we can TRACE and color or decorate with markers, crayons, and coloring pencil. The usuals. If the teacher does not have coloring or as my teacher calls them tracing sheets then you can print some yourself. I say keep it simple. Crayons, coloring pencils, markers, construction paper, tracing sheets, glue and the magazines. as you certainly do not want to get yourself and the kids in trouble and have a teacher on your back. And make sure before you go that all materials are put up, tables are clean, floor is swept, AC is off, and windows and blinds are closed. I say start cleaning up 5-10 minutes before the bell rings.
Good luck and much luv,

im in 5 grade and heres some fun, easy things that dont make messes but are still art based. look up some fairly easy art facts on the internet. put them on notecards and split the class in two groups. play a "game show game" by taking turns asking questions. if they get it right, they get a point, if they dont, the other team tries to answer the question. let them talk as a group and decide their answer, we love it. you can also just set out some paper and paint or let them just color with markers. if its warm outside, take a walk and let them get some fresh air. point out some art stuff on the way or something, be creative. good luck.

ps-what kinda teacher doesnt give lesson plans, thats weird.

Have them make a collage using old magazines and newspapers they can bring from home. They will have a ball and you won't know where the time went! That should take a couple of days.
Another is to have them pair up and then each can do a portrait of the other but the trick is that they have to be abstract (like Picasso)
Another is to have them close their eyes and draw anything. It's fun and makes them realize how important it is to perceive through other senses beside their eyes.
That should take care of you for a few days.

OOh ooh! Here's a great thing. Home made play dough! Cheap and easy. they can make it and then sculpt it.

Good luck.
