Its a good question that I used to ask my shop teacher. I think its poinless to paint to layers, but he explained to me that putting primer on seeps in the wood that your painting to make the paint come out smoother when you put it on. Still, i think it would save time to do that but he said it would thin the paint and make it come off easier.

You are stuck with the primer so the shine will not come thru. Or you will have to strip away the old paint which is very messy and could even be damaging to the bottom layer. If it is an older house however you may want to do the strip so as to get the old paint out as it may contain lead.

Kilz and regular primers have specific jobs!! kilz not only primes but is used to kill mold and fungus in woods or ceilings!! primers seal wood so that paint does not soak in or fall off .. paint adheres to the primer for nice even coats.. DO NOT play cheap and mix them, you will end up with a very bad paint job!!! be lazy now and do four times the work later getting all the bad stuff off and doing it right!!

Kilz comes in oil and latex, there's Kilz which is oil and Kilz 2 which is latex. Another answer says Kilz kills mildew, it DOESN't and if anyone has doubts go to the Kilz site. Let me make it simple for ya Jas, you've got a pitt bull for a dog would you put a prarrie dog with it WHY NOT because even though there both dogs they don't mix.

You can if both the primer and the paint are made of the same base. The original KILZ is oil based and will not mix with latex paint. KILZ II is latex based and should mix fine with latex paint.

First of all kilz is an oil base not latex or water like the last guy said, They dont know what they are talking about. Kils is meant to be a primer to seal bad oders or stains in your walls or floors . And when you use kilz you dont want to use an airless to spray with the overspray will kill you really fast. So the answer would be -NO-. I do this kinda work for a living.

You can it just need to be an appropriate base tint. Personally I just add 1 cup of the paint I intent to finish with to the kilz first then paint that way I only need 2 coats the Kilz and the top coat.
