Individualism, by definition, is a social theory that advocates the liberty, rights, and independent action of an individual. On the side is collectivism, which means advocating the wishes of the collective. From the Chinese point of view, Yao should have continued to live under collectivism, putting his community, teammates, and country above his right to express his opinions. In Chinese culture, obedience and respect to your teammates, etc... is of utmost importance. No one in China would dare to speak publicly against his or her teammates. It is not accepted by the culture. In the United States, speaking up your opinion is allowed, commonplace, and even supported to a certain extent. After living in the United States for several years, Yao clearly adopted the American way of voicing even a negative opinion. (CONTINUED IN ADDED NOTE!)

To the people of China, this was downright betrayal of his country and his culture. To Yao, it was embracing a more appealing cultural practice.
Another reason why the people of China were angry with Yao is because their culture has a relatively strong Uncertainty Avoidance Measure (UAM). Some of the characteristics that identify a culture with a strong UAM are low tolerance for conflict, low flexibility, and uncertainty being considered a threat. These factors are present in Chinese culture. By creating uncertainty and conflict through speaking out in public, Yao violated the cultural norm of the Chinese people. They therefore considered it a betrayal of his country. Because America has such a weak UAM, the Chinese people blame the Americans for changing his values.

Try this: rather than trying to edit what you've written, start again. Tell yourself: if I were explaining this to my ten-year-old brother or sister, what would you say? This might help you simplify your points and get to the heart of the matter.

Also ask yourself: what is the main thing I'm trying to say? Write that down, in one or two sentences. Then: what are some other important points that I'm saying? Write those two down, in one or two sentences each.

If those don't work, your MS Word should have an editing feature. Click "Tools", and in the list you'll find and click "AutoSummarize". Select a percentage: 25%, 50%, or whatever you want. Depending on your settings, the computer will highlight what it thinks are your key sentences, or it will elimitate the extra verbiage and leave only the most important points (in its opinion). Use that as your guideline to whittle down your answer.

Good luck and God bless!
