The first one was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, basically what was left of the Russian Empire after the Great War and a terribly confusing set of civil wars.

After what is called WWII a number of Eastern European countries were added to the list, willy nilly. These included the bulk of Germany, Poland, Hungary Romania, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia. Albania and Yugoslavia also had Communist governments, but, as they were not contiguous to the Soviet Union (as the USSR is normally known), they were not controllable by the Russians. Italy and France (and clandestinely, Spain) all had powerful Communist parties and might well have joined the group had it not been for the Marshall Plan.

Five years later Mao Tse Tung brought the most populous country in the world into the fold, and then there were Tibet, North Korea and Vietnam. Oh, and Cuba.

Is that enough?

The Soviet Union (1917-1991)
Which included Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Belarus, Georgia, Ajerbijan and most of the Stan countries

People's Republic of China (1949-present)
North Korea (1953-present)
Cuba (1959-present)

Eastern Bloc under USSR (most 1945 to 1989-91):
East Germany (1945-1989), Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic and Slovakia, 1945-1990), Hungary, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria

Southeast Asia (since 1975)
Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia

Communism was so frightening and scary it has vanished from most of the places it existed.

Italy was run by Communists on occasion, but was always a Democracy; and France had several Socialist governments.

In a communist country, the government gets all the resources to distribute evenly to society. The problem with this is that some people don't work as hard as others and communist societies tend to have too much control. Freedom of religion and speech can be taken away. Well, China, Vietnam and Cuba are still communist.
