Physician assited suicide is currently illegal in 49 out of 50 states. Is that the law you are talking about?
If so, there are several reasons. Some Doctors feel it violates their oath, and should not be something Doctors do. Some states fear that it would lead to murder with a note, that is to say, after the fact, who can tell what the person really wanted. Christianity as a whole dislikes suicide as it is mentioned as a sin in the bible, however the Chatholic Church decided in Vatican II that suicide as the result of mental illness is not the persons fault.
As to suicide on the whole, quite often it is commited in ways that harm others (often the children and spouse) or innocent people. Throwing yourself off a bridge over a crowded highway can actually cause fatal car accidents, etc. Suicide by cop, the current alternative, often starts with a gun toting rampage, and a few murders.
These are just a few of the reasons that suicide might be illegal. Still seems like the only logical option sometimes though.

I have no idea. It's a completely useless law, but at the same time it doesn't really hurt anyone. If you're dead, you can't be charged, you can't be imprisoned, & they really can't get much out of you. I suppose it's possible for the government to take a fine out of a suicide victim's bank account or something of that nature, so maybe it's just to make some money.

For the same reason that prostitution is banned and why sodomy used to be banned. Legislatures have banned these activities because they deem the activities to be immoral.
