Most Great Whites are only brought into captivity because they are sick or injured They are normally released back into the wild as so are they are healthy again. There are several factors relating to why it is so difficult to keep Great White in captivity
1. Their size, they can grow up to 21 feet long. It's difficult to accomadate that size in an aquarium.
2. Their aggressive nature, great whites will eat just about anything. If the are put into a tank with other fish or mammals, they will more than likely eat them.

The links I posted say some more about great whites in captivity.

Because 1: there is no aquarium in the world that is big enough for it to get the required amount of swimming it needs to in order to properly breath through it's gills, 2: there is no aquarium in the world that can properly sustain the appetite of a Great White without some serious funding because a Great White can eat an Elephant seal which, amounts to about a thousand pounds or so, that one Great White can consume in a week, 3: they are on the endangered species list which makes it too risky to try and captivate on when, there is the chance that it could die, lowering the amount of Sharks that are alive, 4: if the there is an aquarium that could meet all of those standards then they would still face one problem which is where the deuce are they going to get the sedatives to calm a Great White Shark that's, like calming your mother in law down after telling her that your going to be marrying her kid in a week.
