The first issue is cold starts in the morning. When I start the car in the morning it idles very rough then seems to settle down after about five minutes. I thought this was an obvious glow plug problem. I had all the glow plugs and the relay replaced but the problem persisted.

The second part to this idling problem takes place when the car is warm. A typical scenario is this: I’m driving on the freeway and the car is running perfectly. When I exit the freeway and come to an idle at say, a stoplight, the car starts to idle roughly. Sometimes the problem is so bad the car looks like an out of balance washing machine.

Despite my fears, the car has never died but it feels like it will at any moment. Overall, it feels like the car is starving for fuel. Maintenance wise, the filters are clean and I add the occasional fuel treatment.

Just last week, I had the injectors replaced, to the tune of 668.00. When I started the car the next morning the problem remained. Help!

Some of them just do this. But here are some suggestions:

1) As Dr J says, adjusting the valves is a good idea. This has to be done every 15000 miles on this engine. The valves in this motor are prone to recessing (beating themselves into the head). If you don't open up the clearances regularly, you'll ruin the valve train.

2) Filters, air and fuel.

3) Clean the Alda connection (see link)

4) Run a can or two Diesel Purge (see link)

5) Increase the idle speed a tad. Don't go over 700 RPM

You may find that no matter what you do, it's rough when it's cold. That happens, it doesn't mean anything bad. Roughness at idle may or may not be fixed by the above steps. These cars have a lot of personality quirks, this is sometimes one of them.

You might try 0W-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic(last's about 7500 miles). You MAY also have an extra injector(cold start injector/valve) which kicks in when it colds. When it does not, it will make for a very rough cold idle.

Have all the fuel filters been replaced? The BEST fuel treatment is TECHRON(get the BIG bottle) at a Chevron station, and run the entire tank on that treatment. Expensive but well worth it.

I have this same problem with my 84 190E. I'm not sure what the problem is but when i stick it in nutral or park it goes away. But it doesn't happen all the time. I think it has something to do with the sensors located close to the thermostat housing. One of the wires might need changing.
