Michaels crafts store sells several different types of bags of buttons. The big bags are $4.29 each, and contain tons and bunches of buttons. It looks like a small bag but really isn't. They also have a plastic bowl of buttons for a little more than that, maybe $5.50 or $6.50 or so. There are small bags of special buttons for $2.29, but you only get a small handful. I'd use those for special accent pieces. Every couple or three weeks, there is a coupon in their newspaper ad for 40% off any one regular-priced item. These big bags of buttons are almost never on sale, so the coupon works for them. They actually have several different styles of bags of buttons, so look for the one that suits your purposes best.

Try Michael's craft store or a JoAnne's fabrics store- if you are not in a hurry and like to search for treasure, I have always lucked out with random pieces of fabric and buttons for projects at Thrift stores. Try a Salvation Army or Good Will.

Garage sales are also a great place to find sewing projects that people started and never finished.

Try "Big Lots". I have found a lot of cute buttons there for decorative purposes - like down the front of a blouse etc. The fabric stroes just want way to much!! Good Luck!!

The Salvation Army used goods outlet in my community sells
them in large mixed bags for maybe a dollar. Ditto, costume
jewelry.

Hobby stores like Joann's Fabrics usually sell them by the bag.

Check garage/yard sales and estate auctions. Old people used to keep jars and jars full of buttons for who-knows-what.
