I'd like to be able to take DVD's and CD's containing .avi files and view them on the 360. Do I need to convert them or can I load some software to the 360 to accomlish this?

You would need to convert them to DVD or anotehr file format the 360 can play. Right now it cannot play AVI's (I tried too, but I can still do it on my xbox). You can stream files but that's probably not what you'd like to do.
An easy converter is ConvertXToDVD. Good program, does a solid job and will easily convert those AVI files to DVDs for you (I've used it several times on anime episodes, works very well!)

DVD format works but you can also get a link cable and run windows media from your computer through the 360 for mpeg's and avi's n all that..
