Sex, drugs and rock and roll (more specifically...rap, hip hop)..
leading to the lack of desire to attend or pay attention to what is being taught in their school.
Those that cannot spell correctly even simple words, or use proper grammar, have simply fallen behind in their education and have now joined the ranks of the growing legions of the illiterate.
How many times are we going to see:
the word "loose" instead of the word "lose"?
"separate" misspelled over and over as "seperate"?

It is indeed a sad commentary on today's youth (and even more frightening...on what is in store for the future of America).

Hats off! to the teachers who are on the front line of the war on illiteracy and how frustrating it must be to see all their effort and dedication go right down the drain with the results of the next test or quiz showing that only 20-30% of the class passed.

The answer does not lie in "Spell Check", that's only a band-aid that covers up the real wounds of ignorance and indifference.

You're preaching to the choir here.... its not like the 'spell check' button isn't right there. I guess maybe there are lots of people for whom English is a second language.... If this was a German site, I doubt I could do as well as these folks are.

The grammar isn't much better. People on her don't capitalize the beginning of their sentences or end a sentence properly with four dots for end ellipses.
Or maybe it doesn't matter, since people are just trying to get their points across, not win a spelling bee.

As new technologies come around, old skills become lost to most people. Examples are the knowledge of how to skin a deer, build a shelter, start a fire, et cetera. Spellcheck is a new technology, relatively speaking.

I think that a lot of people couldn't be bothered spelling properly as alot of the time people know what the initials stand for. they are just lazy also some people didn't get taught properly at school.

The spelling on the internet in general is disgusting.

The most common misspellings I see online are:

LOOSE instead of LOSE (as in - I LOSE my car keys frequently)

COMMING instead of COMING (as in - The pizza man is COMING soon)

PEAK instead of PEEK (as in - I took a quick PEEK out of the window)

And of course the misuse of "their, there, they're" and "your, you're"

Add in the constant abbreviations that "ppl" use online, coupled with their spelling ignorance and we have ourselves a literacy war brewing.

I think the repetitive misspellings of simple words online leads others to believe that the misspelled word is in fact the correct spelling, thus propagating a vicious cycle of ignorance. The future is DOOMED! Thank you MTV...thanks a bunch.

It's laziness. I think some of it has to do with a lot folks asking questions on here are foreign, and not very good spellers either.
