Just because other fish eat them doesn't make them a special type of fish that is immune to toxic chemicals like chlorine. They are also pond fish which a lot of people don't realize and grow more then a foot long.

It depends on your regular tap water. If the chlorine and chloramine level is survivable for the short duration your feeder is to be in it, then maybe you can. But do add some water conditional if you have them as that would reduce the stress from the chemical and perhaps your feeder would last longer.

I have an advise for you on using feeder goldfishes, do not feed the feeder goldfishes to your fish immediately upon purchase, put the feeders in a quarantine tank and add in Methylene Blue into the quarantine tank to try to kill as much nasties and parasites before you drop your feeders in your main tank. Keep the feeders in your quarantine tank for at least half a day if you can.

While you have them you should treat them just as you would any other fish. The best thing to do is buy your feeder several days or a week in advance of when you will need them and keep them in a seperate tank for that week. Feed them well and watch them for disease so that you don;t infect your ther fish when you use the feeders.

How long will you be keeping them before you use them ?

You want to keep them alive until then, so same rules apply as regards cycle, filtration, heater unless you're using them immediately.

In which case you want to also be aware of the possibilities of them carrying disease already because of poor care at LFS - they're only feeder fish so they don' t get the tlc.

This means to me that you want to be able to keep 'em alive long enought to evaluate whether they are likely to make your fish sick, which means you need a basic cycled set-up.

Unless you just want to chuck 'em in and take the risk.

They need dechlorinated water to survive. Many stores do not feed them enough, if at all. This is cruel. Likewise, they don't live in the cleanest water and stores leave dead fish with them. The result? They get sick. You feed sick fish to you predator and guess what??? They get sick too!
