I'll be blunt. I haven't found a lot of good music for the last five years, and I've stopped looking. I really love the old stuff: Karen Carpenter, John Denver, Elton John, Dionne Warwick, and even some harder rock like RUSH (my favorite band). In college, I loved groups like Ultravox, Siouxi and the Banshees, Grace Slick, Split Enz, etc.

My musical taste leans toward the soulful, romantic side. I love hearing Grace Slick belt out tunes with Jefferson Starship, but I love ballads.

What the heck is out there now? Who are the great performers?

well i was gonna suggest a lot but when you say 'romantic' then i'm a little stumped. i know that if you want a different type of music like a band that does a mix of dub, alternative, rock, hip hop,and pop then definantly the Gorillaz. if you like the band Blur then you will totally like them. try Harry Nilson. if you want that mix of powerpop and alternative than go to The All-American Rejects.now, i just read over what you wrote again and a keyword just popped out.SOULFUL. well, Fall Out Boy would be the last thing i would suggest to you but then i saw that keyword. in their newest album,Infinity On High, many people say its a little more soulful because of the way the lead singer's voices has a more R&B feel to it.Panic!at the disco isnt something that expect you to like, but they write some love songs(kinda). Teddy Geiger also has a young voice, but his music just seems to fit under what you are looking for.Jesse McCartney and Ben Folds do too. Also, the old Nelly Furtado songs are pretty good. For some Beach Boys-like music try the English band McFly on for size. And for pop/piano rock, go to Gavin Mikhail or The Fray. Dido seems what you are looking for too. Maybe even Coldplay. oh yea, Michael Buble is good too.

thats all i have that i can think of. i hope i could help!

I thought for a while that U2 was getting pretty played out but then I picked up a copy of "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" and I was sold all over again. Try "Vertigo" or "City of Blinding Lights to see what I mean. They're pretty soulful as far as I'm concerned. Pink Floyd has a couple that are a few years old ("Momentary Lapse of Reason" and "The Division Bell") that really rock by Pink Floyd standards.

A great band that I have just "found" is Blue October. The lyrics and music are simply amazing. Most people know this band for the latest hits "Hate me" and "Into the Ocean". While these songs are good they are a couple of my least favorite songs on their newest album "Foiled". Their songs range anywhere from staight forward rock to power pop. The lyrics are heart felt and amazing. Check them out. Simply amazing. It's the first CD I have bought in a LONG time where I can listen to it from beginning to end and like every single song.

Sample lyrics of "18th Floor Balcony" by Blue OCtober

I close my eyes and I smile
Knowing that everything is all right
To the core, so close that door
Is this happening?
My breath is on your hair
I'm unaware that you opened the blinds
And let the city in
God, you held my hand, and we stand
Just taking in everything

Chorus:
And I knew it from the start
So my arms are open wide
Your head is on my stomach
And we're, we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
Here we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away

So we talk about moms and dads
About family pasts
Just getting to know where we came from
Our hearts were on display for all to see
I can't believe this is happening to me
And I raise my hand
As if to show you that I was yours
That I was so yours for the taking
I'm so yours for the taking and
That's when I felt the wind pick up
I grabbed the rail while choking up
These words to say and then you kissed me

Chorus:
Yeah, I knew it from the start
My arms are open wide
Your head is on my stomach
And we're, we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
Here we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away

And I'll try to sleep
To keep you in my dreams
Till I can bring you home with me
I'll try to sleep
And when I do I'll keep you in my dreams

Chorus:
And I knew it from the start
So my arms are open wide
Your head is on my stomach
And we're, we're trying so hard not to fall asleep
So here we are on this 18th floor balcony, yeah
I knew it from the start
So my arms are open wide
And your head is on my stomach
No, we're not going to sleep
Hre we are on this 18th floor balcony
We're both flying away

John Mayer's new album (Continuum) is really good. His best songs on there are bold as love (a jimi hendrix cover) and slow dancing in a burning room. His try! live in concert album is also really good. both of these albums are blues-rock and soul based instead of pop-rock like his first stuff was and i think many of the songs could be considered romantic

I'll give you a darn good one! His name is Michael Buble. He is not widely known, but he has a great voice and sings on the romantic side. No bad words, no cheap lyrics. He is a classic to come, try his songs "Feeling Good" and "Home". It will be greatness at first sound!
