Face it, it's a lot easier to get reinforcements if they're in the same country as the the troops on the front lines. Supply lines are also shortened, and "Supply is Strength," to quote the motto of the 407th Support Battalion--Napoleon definitely had the right of it when he observed that an army travels on its stomach.

A good storyline to base overly dramatic games and movies on. Oh and a foothold in France to open up a second front but that was just a nice accident.
