Most motherboards should automatically switch to the new card. Older ones will need to be changed in the BIOS.

Make sure to uninstall your old video drivers before installing the new card or you could have problems.

If you install another video card your pc might detect it and choose that one automatically if not you need to go to your bios and change it. you need to disable the built in video and activate your external video card. in your bios there should be a tab or a section where it states what kind of video its using. you need to choose the one that says something like "pci vga" or something like that. I hope you know how to go into you bios and change it. just in case you don't know after you install the video card turn on your pc and press "delete" or "f2" or whichever key it uses to go into your bios and find the section for your video. on a gateway pc here at work its on tab advance and down to video configuration and when I press enter on it, it shows me "agp"(built in) video or "pci" just an example to guide you. oh by the way you can do the same thing for the audio if you wanted to replace it.

You don't need to disable anything, once you plugged the video card in plug the monitor into it and the computer will automatically use it instead of the integrated.

you need to disable the old sound card, then you can install the new one, and windows will pick it up like a new drive
