A yeast infection happens when the natural flora in your vagina gets out of whack and the yeast multiplies like crazy. You can also get it in your throat (that's called thrush), and guys can harbor it on their penises, so be careful with sex when you've got one, because your partner can keep passing it back to you.
There are a lot of ways this can happen. Douching is a big no-no, as is using perfumes or soaps down there. Your vagina can generally clean itself, so leave it be. Wash the outside with warm water and that's it. Also, wearing nonbreathable fabrics can cause them. Use cotton underwear or at least underwear with a cotton lining. Wipe front to back and don't let anything go from your anus to your vagina without a scrubbing (that might be other infections, but still). It might also be a hormonal thing. Before I went on the pill, I'd get an infection at the start of almost every period. Going on antibiotics might trigger one, also, if it messes with the balance down there.
Yogurt is your friend if you get a lot of them. Eating yogurt with live, active bacterial cultures or whatever they're called can help. It'll say on the package.

a yeast infection , loves a warm moist place , such as your private parts , and are a fact of life I used too believe only women got them until my dr diagonised me with a yeast infection , had too be surcimsized too get healed ,a yeast infection is not a STD so don't worry too much about it , just ask your DR for advice on how too treat it ,

There are a number of ways you get yeast infections, such as diabetes, wearing tight pants and underwear, antibiotics, some birth control pills, pregnancy, intercourse, etc. (too many to list).

There are many different ways to contract one. I got one a few years ago, and it was b/c I was drinking too much caffeine and not enough water. I would tell you to drink more water.
