Ok, I'm not directly answering your first question because I don't know, but I am addressing what you said toward the end:
If you have any questions, concerns, worries, fears, no matter how legitimate or illegitimate, bring them up with your doctor! You are in the final stages of your pregnancy and a little worry about "looking stupid" should be the absolute LAST THING on your mind. "Look stupid" if you are worried. "Look stupid" if you have a question. "Look stupid" because it is the health of your baby that matters.
We had an emergency (we thought) as 2:00 am one night. We debated back and forth whether to call the doctor, and finally decided 'we have to'. I started the call with a 1000 apologies, and the doctor just said "Listen, this is what I get paid for--this is what I love--what is your question?"
Make the call and don't worry about it.

I'm 39 weeks pregnant and about the time I was 33 weeks the doctor prescribed extra iron for me to take, and as a result, I too have had black stools pretty consistently since then and until now. I wouldn't worry about it. But wait for a call from your doctor just in case.

Black stools often are an indication of blood. However, you will have black stools if you took an antacid such as tums, malox, mylanta... . That is nothing to worry about. But if you didn't take anything like that, you should go to your doctors office and have it checked out. As far as going four times in one day, it's probaby diet related. I suspect that you probably just have a stomach virus and took the tums to help settle the pain which then led to the black stools. Don't freak out about it but do see a doctor if this isn't the case. I don't think the ER is necessary.

If you are concerned you should go in. Nobody is going to think you are stupid or treat you badly, they are professionals and they are in the business of helping people. Think of it this way, what if you let your embarrassment get the best of you, and it is serious, you would probably never be able to forgive yourself for not going. I have three kids and have been to the emergency room SEVERAL tunes, and I have never been made to feel stupid, even when it did turn out to be nothing.

I'd sit tight and wait for a call back from the doctor. But, if it persists I would probably go to the emergency room. If someone looks at you like you're stupid (doubt they will) just say, "hey, better safe than sorry, right?"

Don't ever worry that someone may think you're stupid. If you have any doubts whatsoever, then you should go to the emergency. It may turn out to be nothing but you never know unless you go. The peace of mind is well worth any embarrassment you may suffer. Good Luck!

okay, just black, formed stools is nothing to be concerned about.
But, if you had a stool that looked like coffee grounds, or with bright red blood, you should immediately go to the er. Are you having cramps or pains as well?
If it was more watery and just very dark in color, you are probely okay, if you have no stomach pains.

Did you start taking iron supplements or a new medication? Iron can make your stool black, as can some medications like Pepto Bismal.
