The Nile goes right through the city and the pyramids are right on the edge. Not very far at all. They offer a lot of short cruises all along the river. I went on one at night. It had a buffet type meal. Don't worry, everyone is helpful. But be aware you will be tipping everywhere you go, even the bathroom! Keep some small denominations of money with you. And always ask how much something costs first, esp taxis. A lot of cheaters there, but some good people too of course.

It's about a 40 minute driver to the pyramids depending on the traffic. The Nile goes right through Cairo splitting it in Half.

It's not far it depends on where you are in Cairo, essentially the pyramids are in Cairo. The Nile river goes all the way through Egypt.
